Kalamazoo Anesthesiology Educating Overseas

Two amazing CRNAs from our KA team, Conor and Janette, recently returned from Liberia. While there, they spent time teaching both student registered nurse anesthetists at the Phebe College of Health Sciences Nurse Anesthesia Program in Suakoko, and practicing CRNAs in Monrovia—covering BLS, trauma management, intubation, and obstetric anesthesia. Hands‑on workshops gave participants the chance to practice airway skills and emergency techniques in a supportive, interactive setting.

Conor and Janette were able to partner with a pediatric surgeon from Bronson Hospital to provide anesthesia for several complex pediatric cases. They also had the opportunity to donate essential anesthesia medications and supplies to support safe surgical care. The medications were purchased using funds through fundraising efforts. If you were able to contribute-Thank You!

It was an incredible experience—strengthening professional relationships, supporting our colleagues, and helping build sustainable anesthesia education in Liberia. They are grateful for the opportunity to learn, teach, and grow together. We’re proud to contribute to anesthesia education and global health efforts, and we remain committed to supporting our colleagues in Liberia as they continue to expand access to safe anesthesia care.

Team Highlight

  • Dr. Vincent Pagano, MD

Dr. Pagano and Dr. Mulder earned the gratitude of Kayla Donnay for their assistance when an EGD for GI bleed took a sudden turn towards potential disaster. They brought essential supplies to the room, helped get IV and arterial access, and provided much needed literal and moral support to help stabilize the patient.

  • Dr. Keith Mulder MD

  • Bobbie Hughes, CRNA

Bobbie was nominated for her stunning composure and clinical acumen when faced with an unimaginable event while transporting an ICU patient. “Almost comically, the elevator became stuck between two of the floors. They were trapped, and Bobbie continued monitoring/bagging the patient for over 40 minutes (!!!) with only the circulating nurse and a med student to assist!”
